Exploring Golden {Colorado Part 2}

Michael and Sara live in a little town just outside of Denver. We were able to drive to the mountains in no time at all. Friday morning, we drove over to the Red Rocks Amphitheater to see the awesome concert venue. Of course, I forgot my camera. After that, we went on a short hike on Mt. Falcon to the ruins of an old mansion before heading back to their house for Sutton's nap.

We started the nap in his pack n play upstairs where it was darker, but they just have a swamp cooler, not an a/c, so he woke up sweaty shortly thereafter. I transferred him downstairs to a bed on the floor, and he took the rest of his nap there. Dark and blurry, but he was so sweet sleeping on a real bed!

That evening, we headed to an amazing indoor water park nearby where Sutton had the time of his life splashing around and going down slides with Adam. Then we made pizzas on the grill before going to bed. I forgot my camera and barely took any photos on my phone that day. :(

The next day, we went to a little park by Michael and Sara's house to let Sutton play.

I love this photo of Michael and Sutton with the sunglasses and Sutton looking up at him.

Sutton was showing off his muscles...

We decided to move on to a park that was closer to the mountains so I could get some mountains in my photos. We stopped at another little park that had this little stream that Sutton had fun walking in.

Sutton loves tunnels, so he went under this tunnel with Uncle Michael.

More muscles...

I didn't take many scenic photos, and the ones I did were mostly out of the car window while we were driving. I was sitting up front, trying not to get car sick.

We got to Golden, Colorado, and found this mountain creek that lots of people were playing in on a hot day. We stuck our feet in and it was FREEZING. Like, hurt-my-feet freezing. I couldn't believe that people were fully submerging themselves. There was a little rock slab that was like a slide right in front of us that people kept tubing down. We even saw a couple paddle-boarders.

It was lunch time by that point, so we stopped at Old Capitol Grill in downtown Golden and had lunch. Sutton and Daddy colored.

Well, I tried...

Golden was a really cool little town with lots of little shops and restaurants. I would've loved to spend more time there if it hadn't been nap time. Maybe next time. :) Sutton posed for me by some chickens.

During naptime, Sara and I went to get coffee at this nearby coffee shop that was great. Then we spent a little girl time at Target and both found some clothes! Always a good thing. :)

Two more parts to our Colorado trip, coming soon...

Road Trip {Colorado Part 1}

Thursday afternoon, we packed up and headed to Colorado to visit my brother Michael and his wife Sara. We'd taught Sutton to say Colorado, and we told him who we were going to visit that morning. So the rest of the day and on the road, we heard "Colorado," "Michael," and "Sara" about a million times. :)

We left after Sutton's nap, and I'd researched several ways to keep kids busy in the car. I packed books and toys and even wrapped up some cheap toys to add excitement. We used a little bit of everything, but mostly Diego and the car DVD player we borrowed from Adam's sister won out.

We made our first stop for dinner after we'd been driving 2.5 hours or so. We pulled over at a rest stop to make sandwiches for dinner, and found that Sutton had peed through his shorts. So he got to eat dinner and run around pants-less. :)

We got back in the car and drove for awhile when we spotted a must-stop adventure opportunity. A big airplane! I don't remember what town this was in, but Sutton loved it.

We have a strange child...

Probably my favorite:

When it was time to go, Sutton refused to move from this spot:

He got in trouble and then the fun was over.

More photos to come...

Favorite Words

I thought it'd be fun to get a video of some of Sutton's words. I bet we'll watch this when he's 15 and laugh and laugh.

Note: I'd just taken off his tattoo on his leg, which is why he kept saying "all gone" instead of "tattoo."

Things Sutton Says...

We've got a 2 for 1 today.

As I'm peeling an orange for dinner:
Sutton: "Apple! Apple!"
Mommy: "No baby it's an orange."
Sutton: "Orange apple! Orange apple!"

Mommy: "You're cute."
Sutton: "Cute."
Mommy: "Is Mommy cute?"
Sutton: "No. No way!"

4th of July {2012}

We had a pretty fun 4th of July with friends last night. Adam and I took Sutton out earlier in the day to buy fireworks. We got some big ones, but then also got Sutton a couple things - two turtles and a car that just shot out sparks, and some smoke bombs. He's not a fan of the loud exploding things. :)

Our friend Scott bought a farmhouse earlier this year and so he and Adam hosted a barn party for some friends. I got Sutton dressed in his 4th of July shirt and took a photo before we went. His smile was too cheesy, so I asked him to show me his teeth and thought this was better. :)

Chillin out by the barn, watching Daddy be crazy with fireworks.

Risa, Val, and I got to hang out and catch up, which was great. It was a little windy and very hot.

Sutton liked playing with the car more than lighting it off. He also got a tattoo from Dillons last night...that's what's on his leg.

Sutton and Daddy posing with the "airmane" firework.

We took a family photo of us all in our patriotic clothes. Love how this turned out.

Scott has some chickens and guineas. They would randomly freak out on us and start squawking. That and the ever-present locusts were our background music for the night.

We had hot dogs and hamburgers and just hung out til it was dark. We were so grateful that Adam's parents came out and took Sutton home to bed so that Adam and I could stay longer. Once it was dark, I took a photo of the barn with the lights...didn't turn out amazing on my phone. Then we started lighting off all our fireworks to finish of the night. Happy 4th!

Introducing Rowan McKinley

Rachael and Matt's baby is here!

Rowan McKinley Clark
6 pounds 11 ounces
19 inches long
Born at 12:10pm on Sunday, July 2

She is so beautiful and perfect! We're so excited to finally see her after all these months of waiting and wondering what she would look like.

I will be posting many more photos, but I had to get up the initial post of the story of her birth, along with a few photos.

Saturday morning, Rachael started texting me that she was having mild contractions that were around 9 minutes apart. We stayed in touch throughout the day, and she continued to have them, getting a bit more painful, but varying in frequency. I decided to pack my bags just in case this was really it. By the end of Saturday, her contractions were slowing so everyone went to bed, not expecting much.

Little did we know.

At 4:07am, Rachael texted me and then called saying that this was it. She was in labor and they were heading to the hospital. I told her I was on my way. I jumped out of bed and gathered a few last minute things before loading up and heading out. I grabbed gas and coffee on my way, and was on the road by 4:40am.

That drive was horrible! I had no idea if I'd make it in time, I wasn't getting any updates because Rachael and Matt were obviously busy, so I was just randomly driving to KC in the middle of the night.

Their birth plan was to have no one at the hospital during labor and delivery, and then they'd call everyone immediately after she was born and we'd all drive over there to meet the new baby. But I spoke with Rachael's mom once I was getting close to KC, and they couldn't handle the excitement, so they were already at the hospital. I decided to go there too, and arrived around 7:30am. They said Rachael was only dilated to 2cm but 90% effaced and they were keeping her for delivery.

Rachael's parents Sandy and Mike and her sister Shelby and I were anxiously giddy, waiting to hear any news. Rachael did an active labor where she was up and walking around, which meant that Matt was busy coaching and helping her throughout the entire thing. He was amazing with her. But that resulted in him not having any time to text us updates. I finally told him I was there around 8:30 and he said things were moving slowly, she was at a 3 or 4.

We passed the time by talking about how excited we were. Then Shelby and I decided to head out for Chipotle around 11. We were on the Plaza in KC, trying to use the GPS on my phone to find our way back, but getting completely lost. In the middle of all that, we get a text from Matt that things are going faster and she's at a 7. We screamed and freaked out and tried to get back to the hospital ASAP.

We got back, told Rachael's parents the news, and they were so excited. Then we waited. And waited. Finally at 12:48pm, we got the text that she was here and all was good. Sandy and Shelby and I screamed and hugged and jumped. Such a fun moment. We still had no idea what time she was born, her name, her weight, or when we would get to see her.

Yay! She's here! We can't wait to meet her!

Around 2pm, we were finally told we could go back to the room to meet her. They said only 2 people could go. The plan had been for me to go in first, meet her, and then take photos of all the family meeting her. Well, Grandma Sandy couldn't wait, so she and I went in together. We saw the sweet new family of three and we both lost it. Sandy took the sweet baby girl and held her for the first time. About 10 seconds later, all the rest of the family (including Matt's family that had arrived shortly after she was born) flooded the room. About 11 people were in there with Rach and Matt. Tears and hugs and squealing all around. They told us her name was Rowan McKinley. Perfect.

This is how she looked when we all saw her for the first time.

90 seconds after we got in there, the lactation specialist came in and told us we had to leave because they needed to work on nursing. So we all went back out to the waiting room and waited. I don't know how much time passed before Matt came out and told us that we could come back in, but it was forever.

We went back in and I got to hold her, and everyone else passed her around too. Then we were moved out of the labor and delivery room into the recovery room, and Rowan got her first bath. I stayed at the hospital til around 7:30pm that night, taking photos of all the visitors.

The next day, I hung out with them all day at the hospital and took more photos of everyone who came to meet little Ro. When it started getting late, Shelby brought pizza and a movie up to their room, so the four of us and Rowan devoured pizza and watched Bridesmaids late into the night.

Yesterday, they were released from the hospital just after noon, so Rachael's brother Alex and I went to decorate their house with a sign and balloons to welcome them home. Once they got home, we did a newborn session with Rowan, and she did amazingly. Slept through the whole thing and was super cute modeling all her little headbands.

I left KC around 4:40pm yesterday and got home to my sweet little Sutton who I'd missed so much. And Adam too. :) I'd never been away from Sutton for that long and it was so hard! But I was so glad to be a part of Rowan's birthday. Sutton got bigger and smarter while I was gone. Not kidding. I had a real conversation with him last night, and he told me "Bless you!" when I sneezed. Good thing he's pretty much a teenager now. :)

Here are the only photos I got of Rowan and I while I was there, so I just had to post them here.

In the delivery room...the very first time I got to hold her.

In the recovery room after things had calmed down a bit.

Sweet baby girl is so good at sleeping!
