Nine Months Later

I found this idea online to take three photos throughout your nine months of being pregnant and having your baby and I loved it. So here's a little collage of our journey with Ren.

Ren's Birth Story

We chose to induce labor at 39 weeks because our baby had been measuring ahead for most of my pregnancy. The neat thing about the date we scheduled it was that February 19 was my Grandpa Rollie's birthday, and since he'd passed away in September, it made that day extra special to us.

The night before our induction, Adam and I took Sutton out to eat at Chili's (the same restaurant we'd had our last meal at before Sutton's birth). Then we went to Target and had Sutton pick out a gift for the baby for his birthday. We were in separate cars, so Sutton and I went home and Adam stayed at the store and got Sutton a gift from the baby. We'd heard that was a good way to break the ice when they meet for the first time. I grabbed Sutton's overnight things and took him to Adam's parents house to stay the night since we were going to have to leave pretty early in the morning for the induction. We said our goodbyes and there was minimal emotion, until I got in my car to drive home. I knew I wouldn't see Sutton until after I had the baby.

I was actually able to sleep that night and got up at 5am on the 19th. Adam and I both took a quick shower, took the 39 week belly photo (below), grabbed our bags, and headed to Wesley BirthCare Center. We arrived right at 6am and were taken back to our room.

39 weeks, and so ready to meet our little man!

They asked a bunch of questions before getting things started. Our first nurse was Mary Alice and she was super sweet, but her shift ended at 7am so we didn't get to spend much time with her. Our second nurse was Donna, and she was with us throughout the entire labor. We loved her too. One neat thing about the BirthCare Center is that the nurses just have one patient. So Donna was in our room 100% of the time after my labor really picked up.

My room number.

The contraction monitor print-out.

This was my view for most of my labor. I was trying to keep track of contractions and also when we had big changes happen.

And my another of my views. Adam was DJ for the day. The theme song of our labor was "Everything is Awesome" from the Lego Movie.

They started my pitocin at 7:15am. I'd been having contractions on my own for the past few weeks, but nothing regular and nothing painful. I asked if they could start the pitocin out slowly in case all I needed was a jump start, so they decided to up it by 1 every 15 minutes instead of by 2 every 15 minutes, which was their norm. You start at 1 (not sure if that's gram, milligram, ounce, or what), and the max you can go up to is 40. I started at pretty much the same I'd been at my last doctor's appointment - 2cm dilated, 60% effaced, -3 station (which mean he was pretty high still).

My contractions became a lot more regular, and we spent most of the morning watching the contraction monitor and just hanging out. My mom came first, and then Adam's mom. Rachael drove in from KC to be here for the birth, and my dad got off work at noon to come hang out as well. Adam's dad ended up bringing Sutton to us during the morning so we could see him, which was so great. The contractions got a bit stronger, but still weren't really painful. By 11:30 I was dilated to 4cm, and they started discussing breaking my water. They were a little hesitant to do that because they felt he was still pretty high up and they were worried that if they broke my water while he was that high, his cord might prolapse. So we waited. Eventually my doctor - Dr. Kauffman - came in and checked me. He said the baby wasn't as high as everyone seemed to think and he was comfortable with breaking my water.

My water had broken on it's own with Sutton, so I wasn't sure what to expect. They got everything ready and basically they just stick a crochet hook type thing in there to snag the bag of water. When they broke it, it gushed. And gushed. And gushed. They said it was like a lake. That was at 12:30pm. I could definitely tell that my belly was deflated after that. Everyone seemed very surprised at the amount of fluid that came out. It turns out that that was what accounted for my giant belly more than a giant baby as we thought.

After they broke my water, the very next contraction was crazy painful. I'd been unsure about using an epidural…though the realist in me knew that I probably would have one since I had to be induced, and they say pitocin contractions are so much harder than normal ones. So when the contractions got painful, I had a bit of a hard time giving the go ahead for the anesthesiologist to come. I went through several contractions, each one seemingly worse than the last. Adam was great…I was squeezing his hand so hard during each one and he didn't complain a bit. I don't remember being in that much pain during Sutton's labor. These were INTENSE. In between contractions, Adam kept trying to convince me to call for the epidural. I finally told the nurse that I thought maybe we should start that process. Then I got up to use the restroom for one last time before the epidural. I had two contractions in the bathroom by myself without a hand to squeeze, and that was tough. With those two, and with all of them, I just really tried to focus on breathing and the fact that this was a good thing…pain meant progress.

The anesthesiologist's name was Nathan and he was so great. It was his first day back to work after 4 weeks off because his wife had just had a baby. He explained everything he was doing as he did it, and the purposes behind everything. Each time I had a contraction, I would motion for Adam to hold my hand and then Nathan would pause until it was over. He got the catheter in around 1:15pm, and said it would be about 20-30 minutes before it took effect. I laid on one side, and that side got completely pain-free in about 20 minutes. But my left side was still feeling each contraction. So we flipped me to my left side. It helped, but I still had a tennis ball-sized area on my left abdomen that felt everything. By the time it was completely in effect, I'd had the really painful contractions for a little over an hour, 12:30pm-1:40pm. After I was feeling better, we noticed that Nathan was wearing a Chive shirt under his scrubs, so we connected over that, and he ended up coming back in our room awhile later and gifting us with a Chive onesie for the baby. Super cool.

They checked me again and I was dilated to a 5. I couldn't feel pain, but I could feel a tiny bit of pressure, and I could move my legs just a little. Throughout my pregnancy, I'd had a ton of hip pain from having to sleep on my sides and my hips bearing all that weight. The epidural got rid of that, so I was loving it. I told Nathan, "I feel so happy!" but then exhaustion hit me because my body had been through so much and I hadn't had much resting time. I told Adam that I wasn't sure how I was going to find the energy to push.

By 2:30pm I was progressing fast and dilated to a 6. They started me on an oxygen mask because the baby's heart rate kept dropping during contractions. I started having a little pain again on my left side. They had a button I could push for extra medication through my epidural and so I used that a couple times and it helped. I dozed a bit, and family came in to visit for a little since we knew I'd start pushing soon.

By 3pm I was dilated to a 9.5. Just like with Sutton, they said I felt almost complete except for an anterior lip. But then they decided that I WAS, in fact complete and that lip was actually just a fold in the baby's head. They started setting up for delivery and called for Dr. Kauffman. Meanwhile, they just let me hang out to "labor down" i.e., let my body push the baby down on it's own so I wouldn't have to push as long.

Dr. Kauffman got there and got ready and I started pushing at 4:04pm. It all slowly came back to me from the last time. I think my first few pushes were a little weak before I got in the groove of things again. When the baby had come down the birth canal a little, they found he was face up, instead of face down like he needed to be. So with each push, Dr. Kauffman tried to turn him. My pushes weren't doing much and baby wasn't turning, so they stopped and started to discuss the use of a vacuum with me. After explaining all the risks, it was just the motivation I needed to push harder to make it work without a vacuum. My pushes were enough to allow Dr. Kauffman to turn the baby into the right position. As soon as he was the right way, I only pushed a couple of times and he was out!

Ren Adler came into the world at 4:34pm and wasn't screaming his head off like I expected. Just a little whimpering until they got him suctioned out. I started crying as soon as I saw his head and his blue-ish, white-ish body. Adam shed a couple tears too (don't let him tell you anything differently). I think he even said "Wow.." a couple times.

We asked them not to cut his cord until it stopped pulsing so that Ren could get all the good stuff from it. It only took about a minute or so. Then they clamped his cord and Adam cut it. They laid him on my chest and wiped him off a bit. I gave him a kiss on his little head and tried my best to calm him. Such a surreal moment. They took him to get a bit more gunk off and put on a diaper, then they laid him on my chest for our hour of skin-to-skin time.

That was such an awesome hour. He laid there, so calmly, just listening to my heartbeat and being so perfect and sweet and little. The doctors (Dr. Kauffman and two residents) worked on stitching me up for awhile, but I only had a tear that was barely 2 degrees, which was much better than what I'd had with Sutton. After they were finished, most everyone left the room and it was just the three of us. Adam was able to text our family that he was here and send a photo, but we didn't give them any other info. We got word that Sutton had arrived, so Adam set up a video camera above my bed, and went to the waiting room to get Sutton to come meet his brother.

Skin-to-skin time with my baby boy.

He looks like a Ren, don't you think? :)

He came into the room with a huge smile on his face…he was so excited to meet Ren. He came up and hugged him and said hi and was just super sweet with him. He gave him the present he'd picked out the night before, which was a little lovey with an elephant head. Sutton wanted to hang out in the room with us awhile, so we finished up skin-to-skin time and tried breastfeeding for the first time with just the four of us in the room, which was really special. Ren gave Sutton his big brother present, which was a LeapPad (video learning game thing), and so Sutton and Adam played with that while I nursed Ren.

The nurses came in when he was done eating and weighed him. My guess before he was born had been 8 pounds, 12 ounces. He ended up being 8 pounds 9.5 ounces, so I was really close! They did a few little things to him, then it was finally time for our family to come meet him. My parents and Adam's parents were there, along with Adam's sister Jessica, and Rachael (who took so many great photos during this time…forever grateful!). We had Sutton sit up on the bed and when everyone was there, Sutton got to tell them that the baby's name was Ren. I had to repeat it so everyone could understand. :) Then Sutton held him for a minute, we took a few family photos, and then he was passed around to the grandparents.

After awhile, everyone left and then Adam sent the text out to our list of friends with the name and stats. We gave Ren his lovey and he snuggled with it right away. We just hung out for a bit and let the epidural continue to wear off until I felt like I could get up to use the restroom with the help of the nurses.

The first night was pretty great. Ren was kinda awake and fussy when we'd lay him down in his bassinet until about 2:15am. I fed him one more time and we laid him down and he went to sleep so we did too. I woke up around 5:45am to try to feed him and he refused to wake up to eat. I kept trying, but Adam slept through all of that. He didn't really wake up to eat until sometime in the 8am hour, so he and Adam got lots of sleep while I was wide awake, worrying that my new baby wasn't eating enough. Ha.

Nursing started easier than with Sutton. It took me awhile to get Ren interested in latching on, but when he finally did, he went at it with a vengeance. He has a very firm suck. Which has since proved painful for me, but we won't get into that here. Suffice it to say that he nursed very well while we were in the hospital and was pretty content and made several dirty diapers for us.

Thursday was a lot of hanging out, having our vitals checked, waiting for Ren to be 24 hours old before they could do all his blood screenings. I took a shower in the morning and then we had a few visitors throughout the day. Sutton came back and held him for awhile. He had a hearing screening, was circumcised, and after he was 24 hours old, they did his blood tests. We were discharged that evening around 7:30pm, and while I was iffy about going home so soon, it was fine and our bed at home was very welcome after sleeping in that hospital bed the night before. :)

Adam and Rachael wheeled me out to the waiting room in a wheelchair, where we stopped and put Ren in his car seat.

He was NOT a fan of being in the car seat for the first time.

And NOT a fan of the car either. But he was good once we started driving.

We went home on a windy and chilly evening.

I was a little anxious on the drive home…we were going to have Sutton come home after we got there and we were all going to be together at home for the first night. I didn't know how that would go and it was a little scary. Adam tried to talk to me about how it wasn't something to worry about…we could do it, we had to do it, and worrying wouldn't change anything. I put on my brave face and it was really great. Everyone did good and everyone was happy.

I will post photos of Sutton and everyone else meeting Ren in the hospital for the first time in another post. I haven't even proofread this because, as you can imagine, time is in short supply around here. Hopefully it is an accurate and semi-coherent account of Ren's birth!

A Few Photos

I haven't gotten the photos off my camera yet, but I figured everyone would be antsy to see a photo, so here's one I posted from my phone of Sutton holding his new brother Ren. :)

This was his debut on my Instagram and Facebook. Snuggling with the lovey that Sutton picked out for him for his birthday.

A side-by-side comparison of inside and outside. It's definitely the same guy.

And here's one that Rachael got in the hospital of the 4 of us. I can't even describe the joy I have for my new family of four!

We'll be doing "real" newborn photos sometime next week, so stay tuned...

38 Weeks {Baby #2}

How far along? 38 weeks

Weight gain: 54-55 pounds

Baby is the size of a(n): Pumpkinprobably around 8 pounds, 4 ounces

Food cravings/aversions: Milk, ice, water. Chocolate.

Sleeping: Having trouble falling asleep a lot of nights. Not sure if it's the pregnancy, my caffeine intake (which isn't much, but tends to happen in the evenings), or what. Having contractions during the night. But I'm still sleeping hard when I do sleep. I think it's good that Adam isn't in the bed with me any more. Diesel has taken to sleeping smack in the middle of the bed and I'm usually positioned diagonally somehow across the entire bed.

Milestones: One week from today, we will meet our little guy and I will be done being pregnant! I can't wait!!!!!! I had my last doctor's appointment yesterdaythe next time I see my doctor, I will be pushing out a baby! :)

How I'm Feeling: DONE. It seems like this week will take SO long. But on the other hand, I'm sad that this is my last week with just Sutton. I've been really irritable this week because I feel so heavy and gross and tired and I think I take it out a bit on Sutton, so I feel bad about that. Which makes me want to be done being pregnant even more. But then I get sad that this is my last week with just Suttonit's a vicious cycle.

Interesting things that happened this past week/anticdotes: I re-read Sutton's birth story and everything sounds very similar this time aroundI'm dilated and effaced the same as I was with him and Baby hasn't dropped yet. At my appointment yesterday I was dilated to 2cm and still just 60% effaced. But then my doctor stripped my membranes (aka irritated my cervixthanks Mom for the tip!), which can send you into labor or even just help you dilate. I was a little crampy last night after that procedure, but it never turned into labor. Adam says I have to wait until after tomorrow night when he finishes parent/teacher conferences, then I can go into labor. :)

Last Photo Shoot {Sutton}

Today I got the itch to take some final photos of Sutton as an only child. We went out to the studio on this snowy afternoon and got some great ones that really show who he is at just over 3.5 years. I love this child so darn much!!!

This is his attempt at a model face:

The superhero pose (we're really into superheroes):

Let me tell you how fun it is to lay on the floor to take photos at 9 months pregnant...

37 Weeks {Baby #2}

How far along? 37 weeks

Weight gain: 52-53 pounds

Baby is the size of a(n): Watermelon, probably around 7 pounds 12 ounces

Food cravings/aversions: Milk, ice, water. I always want sweets, but they all leave a bad taste in my mouth. Still doesn't keep me from eating them though :)

Sleeping: Goodstill turning a lot and having a lot of dreams. And getting up a lot. But when I sleep, I sleep hard. I can't sleep in past 7:30a-ish because I have to pee and eat by then. Sutton has been sleeping in til 8 or 9am every day this week (he's wonderful) and I wish I could too!

Milestones: We're considered full term! So if Baby D came now, he should be good to go. And we have less than 2 weeks to go, no matter what!

How I'm Feeling: Having some contractions still. Had some yesterday that were painful, but they went away. Moving around and doing household chores just takes it out of me. I still get shortness of breath, which makes me think he hasn't dropped much yet. Definitely feeling my size.

Interesting things that happened this past week/anticdotes: At my doctor's appointment, he checked me and said that I am 1-2 cm dilated and 60% effaced. Progress! Still hoping I go into labor on my own before my scheduled induction on the 19th. Also, I never weighed more than Adam when I was pregnant with Sutton, but I definitely just passed him in weight this time. Yikes.

Just so you know, Sutton insists on taking these photos every week when I take my belly photo…I have nothing to do with it. But I figure why not post them. :)
