Sutton {3 Years Old}

Sutton is three years old!

And just for fun, here's the comparison from the last 3 years:

I know it's the most cliche thing in the world to say, but...how are you already three years old?! I feel like as a young married person, and then when I was pregnant, I always pictured myself with a baby. But you're definitely not a baby anymore. You're a real life kid!

Some updates:

*We're potty-trained! It's a wonderful and glorious thing to only have to change your diaper for night time. About 2 weeks before your birthday, we buckled down to potty-train you and it was a breeze. I think we waited until you were old enough to understand. Pretty much no accidents since the first day we started. And your little bum looks so cute in undies. :)

*When you went camping with Daddy, he taught you how to pee outside and you watered all the trees. Boys have it so easy. :)

*You're wearing 3T size clothes. A lot of pants are too big around the waist, but I'm buying that size so they'll hopefully fit you longer.

*We went through a rough patch with napping about two months ago, and I thought we might be seeing the end of the nap. But alas, things have straightened out and you're back to napping around 2-3 hours each afternoon. Since Daddy is home for the summer, we've been a lot more lenient about when we put you down, but usually is around 1 or 2pm.

*Your favorite drinks are apple juice and sometimes chocolate milk. You love mac n cheese, ketchup, and strawberries.

*When you want us to do something but want to be all passive about it you say, "You can do _____. If you want to."

*You love to say "Hey! Hey! I have a good idea!" But it's usually very anticlimactic. And it mostly sounds like "Hey! Hey! I-ah-uh-good-deeah!"

*You're very serious when you tell us things. You like to list all your points and in between you say "And THENNNN...."

*You believe you're a racecar. Called Sutton Racecar. You make engine noises at every possible opportunity.

*You like to say "I didn't know that!" One day, we were sitting out in the driveway and Daddy laid down. You said "Daddy! I didn't know you could do THAT!"

*You pretend to shoot guns by sticking your thumb up, grabbing that wrist with your other hand, and stretching out your arms, saying "Pew! Pew!" We've progressed to that noise. It used to be "Suit suit!" like for "shoot shoot."

*You like to put "ie" on the end of words. Like boat is "boatie," flip-flops are "flippie-flops," and on and on. I think I started the trend and Daddy thinks it's bad but I think it's cute.

*I'd made a note about how you said "Na-got" instead of "Forgot." But I think you've corrected yourself lately. Or at least some of the time.

*You like to eat waffles with peanut butter and a banana for breakfast. Sometimes we switch it up with peanut butter/jelly toast or eggs. But as soon as you wake up in the morning, you ask for a waffle. Sometimes even when you wake up from nap.

*You love swimming. We don't go enough, and so you're usually a little apprehensive at first, but you'll warm up quickly. You'll even lay on your belly in the zero-depth entry pools and kick your legs since we taught you to do that when you swim. You love jumping off the side of the pool and having us catch you.

*You're really too big for your high chair. It's so hard to lift you in there. So we've started having you sit in a big chair at the table for some of our meals.

*You love to play outside. You're always finding sticks, going on adventures, racing around the yard, and driving your cars outside. You believe that dinosaurs live in our air conditioner and we always have to go see them and then run away. :)

*Your knees are constantly scraped and you're really in to band-aids right now. So there's always a band-aid somewhere on your body. You also have a worse-than-usual reaction to mosquitoes, which I'd forgotten from last year.

*No more pacifier. :( You had still been using your pacifier for naps and bed time, and we warned you that when you turned three, you wouldn't get to use it anymore. You were very matter-of-fact about it beforehand, but when it came down to it, the first nap and bedtime without it were very rough. You cried and cried. The second night, we prayed and asked Jesus to help you not feel sad about your pacifier. That helped you a lot, so now any time you ask about it, we talk about how we need to ask Jesus to help you not be sad about it. Oh, and you say it "Paa-ih-wa-wa."

*You are so funny. You make jokes all the time. And you try to copy our jokes.

We were a little whiny during our photo shoot due to the scraped knees I mentioned in the last post, but that's just who you are at 3-years-old a lot of the time. So there you go. :) Here are the rest of the photos we took:

These geese were a little aggressive about getting bread from us. They were hissing and sticking out their tongues.

The geese were too much, so we went onto the bridge to feed the turtles below.

Then I found a non-windy spot {we were of course in a wind advisory the day I wanted to do photos} where we could take our family photos. You were very serious about running to me.

This was a test shot while I was setting the timer {don't try that at home}, but I love it.

And our new family photo. Yay! We only got one. That's what happens when you use a timer and not a person. Now that you're a bit older, I've decided we'll just do nice family photos in the fall for Christmas, and we'll pretty much just do pictures of you by yourself on your birthday.

When we got home, I bribed you with cake to take the front porch photo so I could compare it to your other birthdays. :) You do NOT SIT STILL. This was quite the task this time around.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And...for your viewing pleasure, a video of Sutton on his birthday. I saw this thing on Pinterest where you ask your kid the same questions on every birthday, starting at 3 years old. So here's our video version. I must put a disclaimer that it sounds like he says a bad word about half-way through, but I promise he's never heard us say that word and I think it was just a fluke. Oh well.

And here's a written dialogue, just in case you can't understand:

1.    How old are you? Three.
2.    What is your favorite color? Bluuuuue.
3.    What is your favorite toy? Firefox.

18. What do you like to take to bed at night? Pacifier and blue blankie.
19. What do you want to be when you get big? I don't want you to do that. Lightning McQueen.
20. What do you want for dinner on your birthday? Waffles. Cake cake cake!

Buzzed

Adam decided to shave Sutton's head yesterday. It makes him look so old! At first, he seemed to be embarrassed about it, but he's realized that it makes him feel a lot cooler (in a temperature sense), and so now he likes it.

This conversation took place yesterday afternoon:

M: Rubbing his head, "You don't have any hair, buddy."
S: "Yeah I do. I have new hair. Daddy put it on today. I wike it."

Things Sutton Says...

Every little boy probably says this to their Mommy at some point, but it still made me fall even more in love with the crazy kid. As I'm putting him to bed tonight:

M: "Tomorrow I'm going to hang out with you in the morning but then I have to go to work, okay?"
S: "Why?"
M: "I have to take pictures at somebody's wedding."
S: "What their names?"
M: "Lindsay and Jake."
S: "Why they get married?"
M: "Cause they love each other. Are you going to get married some day?"
S: "Yeah."
M: "Who are you going to marry?"
S: "You! You, Mommy!"

Things Sutton Says... {Supersized}

If you're friends with me on facebook, then you've read all these. But I wanted to record them here since it'll be much easier to go back through my blog and re-read these in the years to come. And just for my reference, these are sorted as most recent first, older last...dating back to last fall.

*Sutton asked me to watch him through the window as he was flying his little airplane around. He threw it in the air several times before running back into the house where I was. Out of breath, he asks "Was that amazing?"

*Sutton is running around the house like a crazy person yelling, "The train is coming! It's gonna get me! The train is gonna get me! Ahhhh!!!" Suddenly, the running slows to a walk and I hear him mutter, "That was close."

*S: "But I don't want to poop in the potty. I want to poop in my diaper."
  M: "Why?"
  S: "Cause I want to."
  M: "Why?"
  S: "Cause I want to."
M: "Why do you want to?"
  S: "Cause I want to!"
M: "Why do you want to?"
S: "Cause. Cause I love it."

*S: "Mommy did God make our Jeep?"
M: "Well the Jeep people made it."
S: "They made it out of Legos!"

*I really only wear my hair in a ponytail to workout. Today, Sutton and I paused our workout DVD to let Diesel out to pee. When I let Diesel back inside, Sutton yells "Let's workout! I have a ponytail!"

*S: "You stay home today."
M: "Ok I will. Do you know what I did at work yesterday?"
  S: "People's wedding!"
  Little smartie is catching on.

*Sutton likes to "call" us in his pretend phone and have whole conversations. Here was the latest:
  S: "Mommy! Answer yo phone!"
  M: "Hello?"
  S: "Hiiiiiiiiiiii."
  M: "Who's there?"
S: "Sutton! and Mommy and Daddy."
  M: "Whatcha wanna talk about?"
  S: "Jesus loves me."
  M: "He does, doesn't he?"
  S: "Let's talk about it!"

*M: "Sutton I have an idea!"
  S: "What's you idea?"
M: "I'll get your Cars movie and put it in downstairs and you can watch it and Mommy will work."
S: "That is not awesome. Mommy, that is not a good idea."

*Sutton learned about knock knock jokes tonight. Here's one he made up:
   S: "Knock knock."
  A: "Who's there?"
  S: "Mommy!"
  A: "Mommy who?"
  S: "Mommy Gina!"

*This morning during breakfast, Adam and Sutton are whispering together:
S: "Mommy, I no tell you what we do today. It's secwet."
M: "Okay buddy. Did Daddy tell you not to tell me?"
S: "Yeah, Daddy say secwet. I no tell..."
  A minute passes.
  S: "Flowers. It's flowers."

*This morning, Sutton told me that we need to have a "little tiny grandma baby." Ummm...?
(Not currently having any kind of baby, which makes it all the more strange.)

*Today's Suttonism:
As he's driving his cars around his race track, I hear him mumble:
"Focus. I need to focus on my driving."

*Sutton's current favorite song is "Sweet Caroline" but he sings it "Super Caroline."

*This afternoon we were looking through my and Adam's dating and honeymoon pictures. About every third photo, Sutton would ask "Where Sutton go?"

*We're listening to music on my phone:
  S: "Let's do Itsy Spider."
M: "I don't have that one on my phone, buddy."
S: "No it's in your mouth. You have it in your mouth!"

*I sprayed perfume on myself, and Sutton exclaims: "You're a girl now Mommy! You're a girl!"

*S: "God made us, Mommy."
M: "You're right buddy. He did."
S: "God made Daddy and Mommy. And Sutton!"
M: "Yep. And did you know that God loves you a whole lot?"
S: "Yeah...I be nice to God. I no hit Him."

*Sutton's logic at 2 years old amazes me. His little RC car wasn't working (dead battery), so he went and got his Legos and told me he was going to build it a new motor.

Things Sutton Says...

Driving in the car...
Sutton: "Wook! Wook at me Mommy!"
Mommy: "I can't right now Sutton, I need to focus on the road."
Sutton: "Why?"
Mommy: "Well...I have to tell the car where to go."
Sutton: "PIZZA! Go get pizza, car!"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You must know...he doesn't use the pronoun "I," instead he always says "My."
We hear a siren in the distance:
Sutton: "Ambulance, Mommy?"
Mommy: "Yeah, buddy, I think so."
Sutton: "Going to help the people? The people who are hurt?"
Mommy: "Yeah, it's going to go help the people who are hurt."
Sutton: "They crying, Mommy?"
Mommy: "Yeah, they might be crying."
Sutton: "My go help them? My go help them stop crying?"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Getting ready for bed one night and he sees his nightlight, which is shaped like a cross:
Sutton: "Cwoss? Cwoss light?"
Mommy: "Yep, it's a cross, isn't it?"
Sutton: "Yeah!!"
Mommy: "Do you see the letters on it? Do you know what they say? They say 'Jesus Loves Me.'"
Sutton: "Jesus? Yeah!"
Mommy: "Did you know that Jesus loves you very much? As much as Mommy loves you?"
Sutton: (Reaches hands up to the ceiling.) "This? This much?"
Mommy: "Yes, that much!"
Sutton: "What's that?" (Points to shadow the rocking chair is making on the ceiling.)
Mommy: "That's a shadow from the chair moving."
Sutton: "Ohhhh..." (Stares at the ceiling the rest of our singing/rocking time, enthralled.)
I try to have deep conversations... :)

Things Sutton Says...

Sutton was in the bathroom this morning with Adam and I walked in:
Adam: "Sutton! Is that Mommy?"
Sutton: "No! Gina!"

I went to pick Sutton up from the Y daycare this morning after my workout:
Daycare Worker: "Sutton, Mommy's here!"
Sutton: "No, Gina! Gina here!"

Adam likes to call me Little Bina, and apparently Sutton as has picked up on that. I walked in the door from a photo shoot tonight:
Sutton: "Hi Wil' Nina!"

Don't they usually wait until they're teenagers to call you by your first name?

Things Sutton Says..

I was upset this afternoon because my iPhone wasn't working and when I tried to update it, it told me I needed to reset, it which meant losing all my info and contacts. I had my head in my hands...

Sutton: "Mommy, what doing?"
Mommy: "Crying."
Sutton: "Oh!" {Gives me a big hug.} "Happy Mommy?"
Mommy: "No buddy, Mommy's still sad."

About 10 minutes passed, and we were getting ready to leave the house. Adam and Sutton were in the car before me, and when I got in:

Sutton: "I love you Mommy!"
Mommy: "Oh, I love you too, Sutton."
Sutton: "No! I LOVE YOU MOMMY!!!!"
Mommy: "I love you too...?"
Sutton: {Getting angry.} "NOOOO!! I. LOVE. YOU. MOMMY!"
Mommy: {Looks at Daddy helplessly.}
Daddy: "Say 'thanks' ???"
Sutton: "I LOVE YOU MOMMY!!!!!"
Mommy: "Thanks buddy."
Sutton: {Calmed down.} "Okay. You happy now Mommy?"

Sweet little guy didn't want me to tell him I loved him in return, he was just trying to make me not be sad from earlier when I was "crying." How does he have that logic at 2 years old? He's so darn cute!

And as a side note, I think I backed up my phone, so I think we'll be able to fix it.

Things Sutton Says...

Driving in the car, he's playing with a helicopter:

Sutton: "What's that?" (Pointing to the blades.)
Mommy: "Those are the blades."
Sutton: "Yes! Good talking! Good talking Mommy!"

Note: He's finally started saying yes instead of oh or okay. Hooray! And here's a photo of my handsome boy.

Things Sutton Says...

Mommy: "Sutton, are you my favorite?"
Sutton: "No! I'm Baby!"

I'd just hung a photo on his bedroom wall and he starts clawing at the wall saying something unintelligible. Finally I realize it's not unintelligible, he's saying "Sube!" which is Spanish for climb. Oh my goodness, we've got a smartie pants.

Things Sutton Says...

These are more just things I want to remember than things that are funny.

*If we're out and we tell Sutton that we're going home or if he just wants to go home, he says "Mommy Diesel." Even if I'm in the car. Even if Diesel and I are both in the car. To him, home is "Mommy Diesel."

*He wakes up each morning saying the name of whoever put him to bed. Without fail. He always used to wake up saying "Mommy! Mommy!" But now it's "Daddy" if Adam put him to bed, and this morning it was "Grandma!" since we went to a movie last night and Grandma put him to bed. It's funny how he remembers that each morning.

Things Sutton Says...

Driving in the car, just the two of us...

Gina: "Are you my little Sutton bear?"
Sutton: "No!"
Gina: "Yes you are!"
Sutton: "No! Tiger!"
Gina: "Tiger?"
Sutton: "ROAR!!!"

Things Sutton Says...

We've got a 2 for 1 today.

As I'm peeling an orange for dinner:
Sutton: "Apple! Apple!"
Mommy: "No baby it's an orange."
Sutton: "Orange apple! Orange apple!"

Mommy: "You're cute."
Sutton: "Cute."
Mommy: "Is Mommy cute?"
Sutton: "No. No way!"

Gina: "Hey Adam, do you have any cash?"
Sutton: "NO! No way!"

Things Sutton Says...

Sutton has always been a good sleeper, and his bedtime routine always consisted of us simply changing his diaper, putting on his pjs, and laying him in his bed. Lately though, he's been asking us to "wock" (rock) him when we tell him it's time to go nigh night.

I don't mind this rocking, I actually really enjoy the time spent cuddling with my sweet boy who doesn't squirm as much when he's sleepy. Our problem has been that we'll rock him to sleep and then once we stand up to put him in bed, his eyes will fly open and he'll say "Wock! Wock!"

We've tried a couple different tactics to remedy this problem. My first idea was to give him a time warning....telling him "we'll rock for 2 more minutes, then we'll go nigh night....okay, 1 more minute." That didn't really work, but now after I change his diaper for bedtime, instead of asking to "wock," he holds up his little pointer finger and asks "one mo minute?" I say, "Yes baby, we can rock for one minute."

Adam came up with the real solution. After we've rocked him to sleep, when we stand up to put him in bed, if he asks "wock? wock?" or "one mo minute?" we say "No baby, you gotta go nigh night because Mommy has to go nigh night too." Apparently he's a sweet considerate boy, because he always calms down and quits crying and says "Nigh night too?" and then goes down without any fight or tears. Love my sweet boy.

Things Sutton Says...

Sutton calls his pacifier his "wawa." So today, I was asking Adam where the "W-A-W-A" was. I spelled it. Next thing I know...

Sutton: "Dubya A! Dubya A!"
