Ren {20 Months}

Life is crazy, so this month's picture update is brought to you by my iPhone. :) Ren is 20 months old!

I actually cut his hair into a "style" (as much as I can with no idea what I'm doing), but it doesn't translate in that photo. It's short on the sides and in the back and I left the top long and I comb it to the side. Which is not happening here. I think it's like a super cute baby-combover. I still have never cut the hair on the top of his head since he was bald up there for so long.

Ren has to cuddle for awhile with someone when he wakes up. Sutton thinks he's so cute during this time, so he got the job this day.

This was the only picture I took of him on his actual 20 month old birthday. He's really into putting his arms up like this when he's excited.

He's also really into getting messy. At every meal. We usually have to do at least 2 outfits changes every day.

I took him swimming yesterday after we dropped Sutton off at school. He LOVED it. He went swimming this summer, but I don't know...maybe just him being a little older and understanding more made it more fun. He was yelling and splashing the whole time and the lifeguards gave him and his friend Greyson some toys to play with. He was way more of a risk-taker in the water than Sutton was at this age.

His cute wet eyelashes.

One of his favorite things to do is play outside. He loves to sit on his brother's bike or scooter or balance bike (pictured below) and have someone give him a ride. He climbed up here all by himself.

Sporting a beard in the bath last night.

Today at the park, he climbed in this bowl.

So at 20 months:

*He wakes up between 6 and 7am. I've been able to bring him into bed with me a few times and he will just cuddle for awhile. If I put a show on my phone, he would be content laying there with me indefinitely.

*He still takes his two naps. One around 9:30am for about 1.5 hours, and one at 2pm for about 2 hours. The lengths definitely vary. He goes to bed at 8pm.

*He is the hardest kid to feed. He used to love everything and we called him a garbage disposal. But now he won't eat ANYTHING. The only way I can get fruits and veggies in him is with his baby food pouches (which we call squeezies). He's obsessed with those things. With Sutton, I could always feed him the same food day after day. Like, breakfast was always a waffle with peanut butter. But Ren will eat a food for maybe two days and then refuse in the third day so I have to be creative. Things he WILL eat (mostly carbs): spaghettios, mac n cheese, grapes, cheese, graham crackers, cookies.

*He drinks mostly milk, but if he sees me put chocolate in Sutton's milk, he pushes his plain milk away and says "cock-ow" which somehow means 'chocolate.' He loves juice but rarely gets it. Except at Grandma's.

*He's obsessed with drinking fountains. A new thing is that when we drop Sutton at school, on the way out we have to stop and get a drink at the drinking fountain.

*He's wearing 12-18 month size clothes. Size 7 shoes. Size 4 diapers.

*He has some favorite shows on Netflix: Masha and the Bear is the current fave, Color Crew, Trotro. Sometimes he likes Littlest Pet Shop.

*His vocabulary has extended a bit this month, but I think only we can understand him. He says hello (hay-yo), chocolate, stuck, hot, dada, mama (though not very often...I'm still usually called dada too), rock rock, walk, please, thank you, and lots of babbling. Most of these words don't sound anything like what they should, but he's consistent, so we know what he means. Any word that has a hard 'K' (like stuck, walk, rock), he just pronounces "kuh" so all those words sound the same mostly. I also feel like he says some words backwards or maybe it's just that he makes the hard syllable sound first. Like 'walk' is "kouw."

*He gets so excited about things. He will ball his fists and tense his neck and babble/yell when he's excited. He does a lot of excited yelling.

*He copies every noise he hears. During Sutton's preschool drop-off today, he imitated the kids who were yelling, crying, a car that was driving by...he's so funny.

*He loves to be funny. If we laugh at something he does, he has to do it over and over.

*He's becoming a better wrestling partner for Sutton. He puts up with and laughs at a lot more than I would.

*I've been thinking about my boys in terms of love languages lately. Sutton's is quality time. He always wants someone to play with him, someone to come over and visit, to hang out with friends. He's always making me feel guilty about not spending enough one-on-one time playing with him. Ren on the other hand is fine playing by himself. He's content to explore on his own. But I think his love language is physical touch. He loves to hug and kiss. Often times he will be playing, then he'll make his way to me to give me a hug and then he'll go back to what he's doing. And all the cuddling...he loves to cuddle and sit on people's laps. It's a fun love language for my baby to have. :)

*He still seems like a baby in a lot of ways, but I feel like he's definitely blossoming as a little boy too. He's getting stronger opinions and his personality is showing through more every day.

Soccer 2015

We had a major parent fail and misread the info for Sutton's soccer pictures, therefore missing his chance to get team pictures AND individual pictures this year. So sad. So before his final game on Saturday morning, I made him pose for me in the front yard. I couldn't narrow down a favorite because they are all classic Sutton expressions, so you get to see them all. :)

Here's the stiff/awkward/unnatural smile:

The "I have a crazy mom who is making weird noises" smile:

The laughing smile:

The in-the-middle-of-saying-something smile:

And last but not least, the in between forced and genuine smile.

Sutton had a really great year in soccer this year. Last year was nuts...a bunch of 4 year olds who didn't know what they were doing. This year started out the same, but he had some good players on his team and we kept encouraging him to try harder. The last two games, he was so much improved, and even scored a goal at each one. He loved his teammates and we might try to get on the same team for next season...he's pretty bummed soccer is over!

A Family Weekend

This weekend, my brother Michael and his wife Sara and their son Carson came to visit from Colorado. It was so much fun to get the little boys together...we realized we don't see them enough!

We all met up Saturday morning at Sutton's soccer game, where he scored his first goal of the season!! Carson and Ren ran around stealing snacks and wipes out of other people's diaper bags, and Carson even sat with the big boys on the team bench.

We had planned on going to Botanica for their BOOtanica Halloween celebration, but the line was crazy long and we decided not to deal with all the people. Everyone came back to our house for a bit and we got the kiddos in their costumes for a picture, if nothing else.

Cutest picture ever, if you ask me. Only took 6 adults acting crazy to get it. :) Everyone but us headed to Newton to eat lunch and Carson went down for a nap. After we fed ours, we also headed to Newton and both boys fell asleep in the car.

We had planned on going to a pumpkin patch near Newton, but with the kiddos' napping, it didn't end up working out. So we just hung out around my parents house.

When everyone was up, we went out to my grandma's land. My dad bought a piece of land less than a mile from their house for my grandma and it's mostly just farmland. Adam decided he and Sutton would camp out there Saturday night. So we went and set up camp and hung out for awhile. The boys loved playing in the wide open spaces. It was so picture-perfect out there with everyone.

Sutton didn't make it into the photo above because he made it his mission to go out on his 4-wheeler and collect every stick and dried out corncob to throw in the fire pit.

We wanted to take a family photo and figured this was as good time as any while we were out in nature. So as I was getting the tripod set up and testing my light, my husband was very helpful.

Sutton and Mom had to join in on the fun.

Family picture time!

Crazy family picture time!

Then I thought I'd take a few photos of Sara, Carson, and Michael for their Christmas card (or whatever they want to use them for).

Ren snuck in there somehow...

His post-kiss face, lol.

Carson loved playing in the fire pit. So many sticks and so little time!

These two were so funny together. Like little twins but SO different. Ren is 3 months younger, but a little taller than Carson. But Carson talks up a storm and Ren doesn't really. And Carson was always taking Ren's toys and saying "Mine!" and Ren just didn't care. First child vs. second child personalities here. It was funny and I'm glad they found a way to get along. Mostly.

They have the exact same expression here. :) Like "What? We're not doing anything."

Adam flew one of his planes around for a bit and Sutton looked through the FPV goggles.

We headed back to my parents house and made dinner. Steak and potatoes. Yum. After dinner, we came back to the campsite and lit the fire. It was a beautiful night. Perfect weather and great company. The babies got a bit restless, but we had to keep them out there until Adam was done making his fire-cooked beef-and-cheese dip.

Adam, Sutton, and Michael camped out there. The rest of us went back to my parents house and got settled in for the night. Sara and Carson were in the guest room downstairs, Ren was in my old room which is now like a den, and I slept on the couch. We all fit!

In the morning, Ren was up first by 6am, so I went and sat with him in the rocking chair where he fell back asleep. I got cold after awhile, so we went out to my bed on the couch and got cozy and he fell back asleep on me again. Then my dad got up and was noisy making coffee so we went and got in bed with my mom, where Ren fell asleep on me again, haha. We were there for about 15 minutes when my mom rolled over, saw Ren, and said she had no idea he was in the bed! For a busy toddler, that's pretty remarkable. It was a fun memory to just hang out in bed with Grandma for awhile.

But then we were all up and busy. As I was getting ready in the bathroom, the boys wanted to play in the toilet, but Ren was okay with just unrolling all the toilet paper instead, haha. (You see him eyeballing it here...)

Sara and Carson are allergic to dogs, so Cooper, Belle, and Diesel had to stay outside. But Carson played with them through the door.

We played in the basement for awhile...that's where all the good toys are.

My grandparents all came over for brunch mid-morning. We ate an awesome brunch of cinnamon-sugar muffins, fruit, bacon, sausage, egg casserole, Dutch apple bread, and orange juice. Then we all went outside to visit. My grandma helped Ren line up all the cars.

Michael and Sutton climbed a tree.

We took a family photo with the grandparents on the back deck too. Diesel even snuck in there.

We tried for a picture of the grandparents with their great-grandbabies, but the two littles were D-O-N-E. As you can see.

We visited for awhile longer and then it was time for Michael and Sara to start the drive home so Carson could sleep in the car. We said our goodbyes but are excited to see them again at Christmas!

Pumpkin Patch 2015

Last weekend, we took the boys to the pumpkin patch. It was so much fun and such a good memory to make with them. The first thing we did was go down the giant slide.

Next up was the big bounce pad. This was definitely our favorite activity. I took a few photos, but then got up and jumped with them. At one point we had the whole huge thing to ourselves.

The picture below is one of my favorites ever! Ren LOVED this bouncy thing and would jump around and fall down on purpose and roll all around. So funny.

Then Sutton took a little train ride.

And Ren crawled around in a wooden train while he waited.

We had to jump off some hay bales (of course).

On to the corn maze!

Ren had a stalk and was hitting all the corn as he passed it.

Sutton and Daddy raced in these tube things.

Then it was my turn to take the boys down the slide. Had to take a selfie at the top first. :)

Then Sutton did this thing that induced claustrophobic nightmares for me. It's a maze that you crawl through inside this chicken coop thing and the whole thing is only as big as that opening. Ugh. I couldn't handle it. But then Adam got in too. Crazy man.

Had to take a quick family photo.

Then they just played for awhile on all the fun stuff.

We went and fed the goats. Ren was apprehensive at first, but after I showed him how they eat out of your hand, he let me put food in his hand and hold it up to the goat. I would hold it there until they got all the food and he would keep it flat the whole time. Then he started reaching through the fence to try to pet them. :)

While Adam and Sutton were doing the crazy small space maze thing, Ren and I went and checked out the pumpkins. He was way too busy to look at the camera.

He found a little one he liked and he kept biting the stem. :/

Then we headed home with two very tired little boys!
