Sutton's Birth

I wanted to write down all the details of how Sutton got here before I forget! This might be very detailed, but I just want to remember everything.

Wednesday evening, we left our house around 4:00 and I had a really hard time saying goodbye to our dogs. I knew that this was the last time I'd see them before the baby was here and everything would be different then. I think it was all just hitting me and I got a little overwhelmed...I just couldn't stop crying.

We made a stop at the studio to pick up my camera and take one last belly photo, then we headed to the east side of Wichita to eat our last meal at Chili's. We talked a lot about what was about to happen - it was the perfect way to start off our birth experience.

At 6:00pm Wednesday evening, we arrived at Wesley and headed up to the labor and delivery floor. We had to wait about an hour in the waiting room for a delivery room to be available for us. Once we got to our room, I changed into the lovely hospital gown, and Adam and I were half giddy/half what-is-about-to-happen-oh-my-gosh. Okay, maybe that was just me.

Rachael drove down from KC to be here for everything, and she arrived about this time. She ended up spending most of Wednesday evening with us, and it was nice to have the company. A nurse came in and started my IV, took all my vitals, and hooked me up to a contraction monitor and fetal heart monitor.

After awhile, the resident who was there - Dr. Oller - came in to talk to us about the drug they were going to use that evening to begin the process. It was called Cytotec and was just a pill they inserted and it dissolved over time. It's main job was to soften my cervix, but for many women, it also jump starts contractions. They did regular checks of my progress. I started out at what he said was 2cm and 30% effaced (so different from what my OB said).

Adam set up the pull-out bed and tried to get comfortable for our long night. At some point during the night, I started having very mild contractions. I wouldn't have known they were contractions, but the monitor on my belly showed that they were. After feeling those, I realized that I'd been having them at home over the past few weeks, but it was basically just a tightening, so I just thought it was the baby moving.

About 5am on Thursday morning, they came in and started the pitocin. This is the drug that was supposed to put me into full-on labor...and it did! I started having more regular contractions, and then my water broke on it's own at 6:15am. That was quite the strange experience. We were still kinda sleeping, and I changed positions. Then I heard a little pop in my stomach...and I felt a little trickle of fluid. Then a big gush. I said "Adam..." he woke up and looked at me, "I think my water just broke." He bolted out of bed, and helped me to the bathroom, while it kept gushing.

After my water broke, the contractions started becoming a lot more intense. I couldn't talk through them and would have to just focus on my breathing. I progressed pretty quickly after that and was told around 8 or 9am that I was at 4cm and that I could have my epidural. My thought was, "Already?" Adam encouraged me to go ahead and get it, so we called for the anesthesiologist.

Getting the epidural wasn't bad at all. The lady explained everything she was doing before she did it. I sat on the side of my bed, curled over around the baby to open up the spaces in my back. I got a shot to numb the area, and that was probably the worst part, though it wasn't bad at all, just a little sting. Then they put in the epidural cathedar and taped it all up. My legs slowly started getting warm and tingly, and the contractions slowly started to ease up. Once I couldn't feel them at all, I was a little giddy and feeling great.

The rest of the day is kind of a blur, and I attribute that to the epidural. It messed with my brain. I slept on and off, and my parents and Adam's parents hung out with us. Rachael was there too...and since she's a nurse, she asked my nurses lots of questions. I had some great nurses - Rosie was the nurse who was with me through most of my labor and was amazing. Unfortunately, her shift ended at 3pm, so she wasn't around to meet Sutton.

I progressed pretty fast, and the doctor made a comment that we might have a baby sometime between noon and 3pm. But unfortunately, when I hit 7cm, I stalled and stayed there for several hours. They kept changing the amounts of pitocin that were being administered to try to get the contractions to be most effective. During the course of the day, I had some great residents work with me - Dr. Loney and Dr. Cooper were both great. At 3pm, Joni came on as my nurse and she was great.

I got really scared towards the end because the baby's heart rate kept dropping with each contraction. At one point, it went below 100bpm and my nurse called to tell the doctor that. Hearing the concern from her, just made me freak out and start crying. They gave me an oxygen mask and had me lay on one side (I had been switching, laying on both sides) from then on. His heartbeat continued to drop during contractions, but not nearly as much, and I guess that's normal.

I went from 7cm to 9.5cm pretty quickly, but there was a small "anterior lip" of my cervix that wouldn't go away, so they kept putting off pushing. After awhile, they decided we should just go ahead and start pushing because he was very low. We started pushing around 4pm.

Before the pushing.

Pushing was interesting...I didn't know if I was really doing anything because I couldn't feel it. I just did what I thought I was supposed to, and they said that was perfect. With each contraction, I would push three times, 8 seconds each. Each time, they kept telling me he was getting lower and lower. They even told me he had light-colored hair at one point. I was slightly discouraged through all of this because my OB wasn't there, and no one had made any mention of calling him - which I knew they'd do if I was close. I guess towards the end, the baby wasn't moving down much, but no one told me that. They started discussing the use of a vaccuum.

Towards the beginning of the pushing, I started having an ache in my left abdomen. It wasn't too horrible, but each time I had to curl over it to hold my legs and push, it got progressively worse. The nurse in charge of anesthesia came in and gave me more medicine since it looked like I might be pushing for awhile. It didn't touch the pain. It kept getting worse and worse and worse. And I kept having to fight through it and push through it and it was the worst pain I've ever felt. Worse than contractions had been. At one point, I was having the horrible pain, I was pushing, and the nurse was poking my belly with a needle to see how far up I was numb. That was the worst moment.

As I was working through this pain and through pushing, they brought up the vaccuum possibility and also called my OB, Dr. Kauffman. I was getting discouraged and so we decided to take a break from pushing while we waited for Dr. Kauffman to get there. The nurse's anesthetist thought the pain in my side was probably being caused by the baby pushing on a nerve, and she said there wasn't much they could do to stop that kind of pain. While I was resting from pushing, I had them lower my bed so it was flat and they turned me on my right side because I thought that position would be more comfortable. While I was laying like that, they gave me a different kind of medicine through my epidural (which I didn't even notice, Adam told me this later). So somehow between the change of position and the new medicine, my horrible pain slowly went away.

Dr. Kauffman got there right as the pain was ending and asked if I wanted to continue pushing on my own, or if I wanted to use the vaccuum. I told him I could give him two more contractions worth of pushing. Between him and Dr. Loney, they were my hugest cheerleaders. They kept telling me how good I was pushing and how he was getting lower. Adam was on my left, giving me oxygen between contractions, and he was so helpful too - whispering in my ear, brushing my hair back from my face. I love him so much more after this whole thing.

The two pushes didn't quite do it, but I found the strength to continue somehow...I just didn't want to have to use the vaccuum. With the encouragement of my doctors and nurses, I was able to push harder than ever at the end, and finally, after two and a half hours, Sutton Grey was born at 6:35pm. They held him up for Adam and I to see and he had the hugest conehead :) and I started crying, of course. Adam and I couldn't take our eyes off of him. Adam went down to see the baby and they asked if he wanted to cut the cord. We'd discussed beforehand that he didn't want to, but then the doctors surprised me and asked if I wanted to. So I cut his cord, which was super weird just because the consistency of the cord was not what I expected!

 Sutton Grey Dreher

They took him away to clean him up and do some screenings, and I just couldn't stop staring at him across the room. He was perfect and BIG. He kept crying and crying, and I found out later that my dad and Rachael had been pacing outside my room (because no one was giving them updates), and they heard him crying and that's how they knew he was here! They went and told everyone else, and they all came and stood outside the door to hear him.

 Dr. Kauffman and our boy.

About 15 minutes before he was born, Dr. Kauffman asked me to make a prediction on his weight. I said 9 pounds. He ended up being 9 pounds, 2 ounces, so I was very close! They had him for about 30 minutes before they gave him to me, which was pretty sad, but I was being stitched up and they wanted to finish all his tests. When they finally handed him to me...nothing else mattered. He was beautiful and perfect and healthy, and I was so in love!

Holding my son for the first time.

Probably about an hour after he was born, all the family came in to meet him. We'd kept his name a secret until then, so when everyone came in, I was holding him, and I said "This is Sutton." It was a pretty awesome moment. I think I probably cried then more than anyone else. :) My mom held him a little bit, and then all the family left. It had been a long day. We had several friends come to visit that evening, and we stayed in the delivery room for about 3 hours after he was born.

Around 10pm, they brought me a wheelchair, but my legs still weren't really working so I needed a lot of help getting into it. We went up to the recovery floor and got settled into our room. That first night was awesome. Sutton slept wonderfully and only woke up once. Adam slipped right into the role of being a dad and changed all the diapers since I wasn't mobile. He also learned how to swaddle Sutton in a blanket because that's what keeps him happiest. Sutton loves his daddy.

We spent the next day resting in the hospital, and I was actually able to take a shower on my own, which felt great. Rachael hung out with us both days we were in the hospital, which was wonderful because since she's a NICU nurse, she was able to answer lots of our questions. She even went with him Saturday afternoon when he was circumsized and she said he did great. We also had an echocardiogram done Saturday morning due to a heart murmur they heard. Adam went with Sutton to have that done. Everything came back normal, thank goodness.

Sutton (making one of his many funny faces) and I with Aunt Rachael.

Sutton's first experience with clothes.

Three generations of Dreher men. Sutton has the responsibility of carrying on the Dreher name.

We were finally able to go home around 3:30 on Saturday, so we loaded Sutton up in his carseat for the first time and went for our first car ride. He didn't even notice. When we got home, the dogs were so excited to see us after 3 days of being apart. They were also very interested in the little person we brought home with us. They kept trying to smell and lick him. We got lots of pictures of them meeting Sutton for the first time. Since the novelty has worn off, Axl is mostly disinterested and tends to leave the room when he starts crying. Diesel, on the other hand, is very curious and always needs to know where Sutton is. He likes to try to lick his head, but we don't let him. The barking hasn't phased Sutton at all, which is what I expected since he heard them bark so much while I was still pregnant with him.

We're settling in here at home, and I'm sure I'll write more about that later. It's hard to imagine having time/motivation to do anything else right now - cleaning the house, going to work, etc. Hopefully these weeks we have off will help that feeling.

The most amazing thing so far is the bond that's formed between Adam and Sutton. Adam is the most amazing, hands-on dad I've ever seen. Since I've been so sore, Adam's been doing the majority of the diapers and getting up at night. He loves holding him and talking to him. The love we have for this little person is so much more than I ever could've imagined.

Thank you all so much for your prayers. We had an awesome delivery experience, despite the pain, I wouldn't change a thing!

Meet Sutton

Here's our first official blog photo of me and Sutton. We've taken plenty, but today was the first day I was able to make myself presentable. How CUTE is he?

39 Weeks - The End

I'm not going to be doing a 39 week update because really, not much has changed since last week as far as my little questionnaire goes. And we'll be taking a belly photo tonight before we go to the hospital, so that will be posted after he's here.

You read right...we're going to the hospital tonight instead of tomorrow morning. At my appointment yesterday, I hadn't changed any since last week...still 2cm dilated and 70% effaced, baby still hasn't dropped. So my doctor wanted to admit me tonight to start a drug that will soften my cervix, and then they'll start the pitocin tomorrow morning.

I'll be honest...I'm getting pretty nervous. I've never stayed in the hospital before, so I hope that it's not too big of a deal. I've also been told that the drug I'll be getting tonight can be very uncomfortable, and I had a dream about it last night and it was horrible. Plus, I have contractions to look forward to. I think it's mostly the fear of the unknown. While I kind of know what to expect with contractions since I had them with my miscarriage, I'm still nervous because at that time, I didn't realize that's what I was experiencing. Plus, I remember that they hurt horribly and my body felt like it was falling apart.

When I think about all that stuff, I get so anxious. But when I think about how I get to meet my son tomorrow...how I'll get to see Adam holding our little boy...I'm just so overcome with happiness. I can't believe it's finally happening. We get to be a little family of three! These last few weeks have gone so fast, and now it's time. It's so surreal...it feels like it's happening to someone else. And to think that women do this every day and having been doing so since the beginning of time...such a miracle doesn't seem like it should be so commonplace. God is good!

I don't know how updating the blog and facebook are going to go, but we will try! I'm sure you all are on pins and needles to find out his name. I know I've been kind of cruel, keeping you in the dark all these months. :) So sorry. Thanks in advance for your prayers for our family...as long as we deliver a healthy little baby, everything we've gone through will be so worth it. Thanks for being supportive and encouraging...we'll try to keep you posted!

Love and Chins

Adam: I love you, Gina.
Gina: Do you love my fat chin?
Adam: I love all your chins.

Here's evidence of my many chins. But look at this CUTE little kitten I got to cuddle with yesterday! My aunt and uncle and cousins live out in the country and we celebrated Father's Day at their house. One of their cats had kittens on June 1st, so we played with the two little babies. This one fell asleep on me and was spasming in her dreams. :)

And NO BABY YET. :( He still has two and a half days to come on his own, so let's keep praying for that!

38 Weeks

How far along? 38 weeks
Baby is the size of a(n): Watermelon
Food cravings/aversions: Dr Pepper, Pop-Tarts
Sleeping: Still not bad...I think I've been lucky with this, and I'm thankful!
Milestones: Dilated to 2cm, scheduled our induction for a week from tomorrow.
Weird things I read online: Well...the average baby is supposed to weigh around 6.8 pounds right now. But, we all know this boy isn't average. :)
Interesting things that happened this past week/anticdotes: I don't know if this fits this question, but oh well. I'm having such mixed emotions in this last week or so. I'm SO ready for this little guy to be here, to finally meet him, to see what he looks like and get to know his personality. But...as weird as it sounds, and as uncomfortable as I am...I know I'm going to miss my belly. I'm going to miss feeling him move around in there, being the only one who is responsible for him. I hope I've documented this time well enough to not forget a second of it. I've loved being pregnant and sharing these 9 months with my baby boy.

Now...who wants to come finish putting all the baby stuff away that's piled up in the nursery? :)

Quick Baby Update

After our doctor's appointment today:

-The belly is measuring at 40 weeks.

-I'm dilated to 2cm (woohoo!).

-Our doctor said he wanted me to get to 2.5cm on my own before inducing, and he thinks I'll be there by next week, so we went ahead and scheduled the induction for next Thursday, the 24th.

-...which means we'll be having a baby next week! AHHHHH!!!! :)

Hmm...

Gina: "So...how far apart are we going to have our kids?"
Adam: gesturing with his hands "About 4 feet."

And Now....We're Ready.

I'm officially DONE with shooting weddings.

I can't tell you what a huge relief this is. I've been so worried about these last two weekends of weddings since I found out I was pregnant. Shooting a wedding (aka: being on my feet for at least 6 solid hours and carrying all my equipment) when 37 weeks pregnant is no easy task.

I'm also an over-worrier. So I tried to never use my pregnancy as an excuse to have people do things for me. My thought process was that, I have to shoot three weddings when I'm 9 months pregnant, so I think I can carry my own groceries, shoot an engagement session in 100-degree heat, walk a mile without a pee break, etc. Does that make any sense?

The looming weddings also made me ignore and "brush off" any random pains, pressure, or weird feelings I'd have in the night while tossing and turning. I'd think...that just CAN'T mean anything, I still have to work, so I just CAN'T have any complications.

I don't think I'm explaining this well. I guess I'm just trying to say that while I still had work to do, I couldn't allow myself to relax and just be pregnant and restful, focusing on what's best for the baby.

Now...I can!

So now...I'm totally ready to have this little boy. He can come out any time and we're ready. But in these last few weeks, I may try to transition into being a normal 9-month-pregnant-lady and make everyone wait on me hand and foot. Sounds pretty dang awesome. :)

Since posts are always better with photos...Adam and I (well really just me, Adam came along as a decoy) photographed a proposal on Friday afternoon at Botanica. It was so cool (though very hot). I'm not going to post any photos of the actual proposal here or on my other blog because the bride-to-be never found out I was there, and that was how the groom wanted it. He wants to surprise her with the photos later. But I got some pretty photos of flowers and my hott hubby, so I'll share those. :)

37 Weeks

How far along? 37 weeks, which is full term! I can't believe we made it!
Baby is the size of a(n): Watermelon
Food cravings/aversions: Dr Pepper, pizza
Sleeping: I slept hard last night, it was awesome. I've been getting really sweaty at night (sorry if that's TMI)...then I had a scared Doberman wake me up this morning when it started thundering again. He just needed a little lovin.
Milestones: Full term! And I think I've decided to induce on the 24th...I would definitely prefer that everything happen on it's own, but since he's so big and since I have to shoot a wedding on July 23, I just feel like I can't wait that long. I have my last pre-baby wedding on Saturday, so I'm hoping we can at least hold out til then, and after that, this baby can come out anytime!
Weird things I read online: Baby boy's weight gain has slowed and he's ready to come out!
Interesting things that happened this past week/anticdotes: The belly is measuring at 39 weeks, I was also told I have a lot of fluid though (so maybe that accounts for some of my weight gain?). I was a little more than 1cm dilated at my appointment this week, but not quite 2cm. A little more effaced than last time, but not much. And my belly skin is so stretched that it kinda hurts around my belly button.

And here are a couple other photos from this week. When Adam got home on Sunday, we had a late anniversary celebration. We went to Genghis Grill for dinner and then went to the theater and saw Prince of Persia. Here's our anniversary photo. We don't look nearly as good as we did on this day 4 years ago. :)

And one morning before I left for work, this was what was going on on my bed. Probably one of the last times this will happen before there's another little boy in the mix!

4 Years

Four years ago today, I got to marry the most amazing man. He has been so much more than just my husband...my best friend, my partner-in-crime, my support, my protector. I can't imagine life without him. I feel like we're perfectly matched and even though we've both changed so much over the past four years, there's not a day that goes by that I don't love him more than the day before.

I thought I'd share some photos from our wedding. :) I had a really hard time narrowing it down to just a few, so this might be photo overload, but I always like looking at other people's wedding photos, so I figured you all would too.

I've shared this photo before, but it's my favorite, so we'll start out with it.

Our awesome wedding party.

During the ceremony, Adam completely surprised me by pulling out a guitar (he doesn't play guitar) and singing (he doesn't sing) Nothing Fancy by Dave Barnes. It was amazing. He has such a good voice and I never get to hear him sing!

At the reception, we toasted with Dr Pepper because neither of us drink. Adam wanted orange Gatorade for his drink, but this was just easier. And the bride always gets her way. :)

Adam also had a big talk with me before the wedding about feeding each other cake. He was extremely adamant that there would be no cake-smashing-in-the-face. So we were nice.

And we're not big dancers, but I really wanted to have a first dance. I'm so glad we did, it was one of the most special moments. These photos just make me smile!

Happy 4 years, Adam! I love you so much and can't wait for 100 more (that's right, we're planning on living to be 125)!

36 Weeks

How far along? 36 weeks
Baby is the size of a(n): Honeydew
Food cravings/aversions: Dr Pepper. That's all. Anyone wanna bring me one?
Sleeping: Still okay aside from all the peeing and turning over.
Milestones: Being dilated is a pretty big milestone, I think. Had my last normal photo shoot last week (still have a couple weddings and two random sessions). We also received/bought the last few baby items we really needed. Had my last pre-baby haircut, paid my last pre-baby bills, had my last pre-baby birthday.
Weird things I read online: He's gaining like an ounce a day or half a pound each week.
Interesting things that happened this past week/anticdotes: See the post from yesterday. :)

Currently...

...my little dog is nestled amongst my legs under the covers.

...my big dog is snoring away to my right on the bed.

...my baby is hiccuping away.

Contentment.

Baby Update

The Drehers had a big morning! We had a sonogram and regular doctor's appointment today and there were a lot of highlights:

{ Sonogram }

-Right off the bat, he (again) showed us that he's definitely a boy! (I'll spare you that picture...it's pretty graphic.)

-They could tell that he has lots of hair (it's the fuzzy stuff above and to the right of the arrow).

-He kept his hand up by his mouth most of the time, but we could still see his cute upper lip. :)

-We could see him blinking. We got a shot of his face, which was SO weird to see. He's really cute and has chubby cheeks! This photo is easier to make out in person, but his forehead is on the right, you can see his eye towards the top, and his nose and mouth to the left of that...his hand is still up kinda covering his mouth. The left side of his face (which is at the bottom) is covered in shadow. The second photo is the same view, just a little different.

-He weighs almost 7 pounds already! The tech said that puts him in the 90th percentile. She said if they give us a skinny bald baby from the nursery, it's not ours. :)

{ Appointment }

-From the info the sonogram showed, they moved my due date up to June 30. For their records, it had been July 3, I was just going by July 1 because that was what he was measuring at at my 10.5 week sono.

-That means my updates will be on Wednesdays now instead of Thursdays. :) And I'll be 36 weeks tomorrow!

-The belly is measuring at 38 weeks.

-I had my first internal (ew) and I'm 1 cm dilated and 60% effaced already.

-I asked about inducing at 39 weeks (so I'd have more recovery time before my first wedding on July 23) and he said that he would do that if that's what I want. That would be June 24. Depending on my progress at the upcoming appointments, we'll make that decision. We talked a lot about the different factors that go into that and the risk of c-section, so I think it's just something I need to pray about and take some time to decide.

I think that's pretty much it! It was quite an eventful appointment and I was so glad Adam was there to see everything and hold my hand through the internal exam. I've heard that they're even worse when you're actually in labor, so that'll be fun. :) And Adam's going out of town tomorrow through Sunday, so let's also all be praying I don't go into labor until at least Monday!!
